Ingredients

4 whole wheat pita breads

1 cup marinara sauce (or pizza sauce)

1 ½ cups shredded mozzarella cheese

½ cup sliced pepperoni (or any protein of your choice: grilled chicken, salami, etc.)

1 cup chopped bell peppers (any color)

½ cup sliced black olives (optional)

1 teaspoon Italian seasoning (oregano, basil, thyme)

1 tablespoon olive oil

Fresh basil leaves for garnish (optional)

Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

Preheat the Oven: Begin by preheating your oven to 400°F (200°C).

Prepare the Pitas: Cut each whole wheat pita in half to create pockets. Gently open each pocket, being careful not to tear them.

Make the Filling: In a mixing bowl, combine the marinara sauce, shredded mozzarella cheese, sliced pepperoni, chopped bell peppers, and black olives. Add Italian seasoning, and season with salt and pepper to taste. Stir until evenly mixed.

Stuff the Pita Pockets: Carefully spoon the pizza filling into each pita pocket. Fill them generously, but avoid overstuffing to ensure they close properly.

Brush with Olive Oil: Lightly brush the outside of each stuffed pita pocket with olive oil for a golden, crispy finish.

Bake: Place the stuffed pita pockets on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Bake in the preheated oven for about 12-15 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and the pitas are slightly crispy.

Garnish and Serve: Once baked, remove from the oven and let them cool for a couple of minutes. Garnish with fresh basil leaves if desired, and serve warm.
